Home›Citizenship›EU Blue Card
The EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU) is Germany's fastest residency route for qualified non-EU professionals. Permanent residency after 21 months with B1 German. No language requirement for initial Blue Card.
Eligibility Requirements
The Blue Card targets highly qualified non-EU professionals with a recognised degree and a German employment contract above the statutory salary threshold.
- Recognised university degree (4-year minimum — Anabin database recognition)
- German employment contract with qualifying salary (see thresholds below)
- No German language requirement for initial Blue Card application
- Must apply within 3 months of arriving in Germany (or at German embassy before arrival)
Salary Thresholds 2025–2026
Blue Card salary thresholds are indexed annually. Shortage occupations (including most IT and engineering roles) have a lower threshold.
| Occupation Category | Annual Gross Salary (2025) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Standard occupations | €48,300/yr | Finance, management, marketing, legal |
| Shortage occupations | €37,800/yr | IT/software, engineering, medicine, mathematics |
| Researchers (Forscher) | ≥ €37,800/yr | University or private R&D roles |
Permanent Residency Fast Track
Blue Card holders have the fastest path to permanent residency (Niederlassungserlaubnis) of any German residence permit.
| German Language Level | Residency Required for PR | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| B1 German | 21 months | Fastest PR route in Germany |
| A1 German (basic) | 33 months | Faster than standard 5-year route |
| No German | 5 years standard route | Blue Card advantage lost |
Family Reunification
Blue Card holders enjoy the most favourable family reunification rights of any German work permit.
- Spouses and dependent children may join immediately — no waiting period
- Spouses receive immediate full work authorisation — no German language requirement
- Spouse's time in Germany also counts toward their own PR/citizenship timeline
Path to Naturalisation
Time on Blue Card counts toward the 5-year naturalisation requirement under StAG §10 (2024 reform). With Blue Card PR at 21 months and 5-year naturalisation, German citizenship is achievable in under 7 years from first arrival.
Best-case timeline: Arrive → Blue Card → 21 months PR → 5 more years → Naturalisation at year 6–7. With the 3-year accelerated track (§10(3) StAG) for exceptional contributions, citizenship in under 5 years from first residence is theoretically possible.
Common questions.
What is the EU Blue Card salary threshold in 2026?
€48,300/yr gross for standard occupations; €37,800/yr for shortage occupations (IT, engineering, medicine, mathematics, natural sciences). Thresholds are indexed annually — verify the current year at bamf.de.
How quickly can I get permanent residency with a Blue Card?
After 21 months with B1 German proficiency, or 33 months with A1 German. This is significantly faster than the standard 5-year route. EU Blue Card PR is the fastest permanent residency route in Germany.
Can I change jobs on a Blue Card?
During the first 2 years, you must inform the Ausländerbehörde of any job change (approval not required for same field). After 2 years, you can change jobs freely within your professional field.
Is the Blue Card available for self-employed individuals?
No. The Blue Card requires an employment relationship. Self-employed individuals should apply via the Freiberufler visa or entrepreneur visa (§21 AufenthG) routes instead.
Can my spouse work in Germany if I have a Blue Card?
Yes — your spouse receives immediate full work authorisation with no German language requirement. This is one of the most significant advantages of the Blue Card over other German work permits.
Do I need a German university degree for the EU Blue Card?
Not necessarily. You need either: (a) a recognised university degree, or (b) at least 3 years of comparable professional qualifications. The 2022 Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz expanded access for IT professionals — you can qualify based on professional experience and demonstrable skills even without a formal degree for certain shortage occupations.
Can I move to another EU country with a German Blue Card?
After 18 months in Germany with a Blue Card, you have the right to move to another EU member state (except Denmark and Ireland) for employment. You file for a Blue Card in the new country — the 18-month German Blue Card gives you a privileged application path. This EU mobility is a key advantage over the national German work permit.
What is the process to apply for an EU Blue Card in Germany?
Apply at the Ausländerbehörde with: valid passport, biometric photo, signed employment contract meeting the salary threshold, recognised degree certificate (or recognition letter from anabin/KMK), and health insurance proof. The employer should also provide a company registration extract. Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks at most Ausländerbehörden.
Does IT work experience qualify for the Blue Card without a degree in Germany?
Yes, for certain IT roles. The 2022 Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz §18g AufenthG allows IT specialists to qualify for the Blue Card based on professional experience (at least 3 years in the past 7 years in a comparable role) without a formal university degree — but this requires the Ausländerbehörde to assess the skills and the salary threshold still applies.
